In the premier class of international motor sports, everything has been going smoothly for years. The Mercedes team dominated the circuits, and their drivers fought with unmatched skill, which was almost always an unequal battle. The Briton Lewis Hamilton has always been unparalleled as the series world champion won title after title.
Only once could another racer endanger his achievements. For a long time, the German Nico Rosberg was the only Formula 1 driver who had beaten Hamilton in the world championship, who at that time, was too sure of himself and made a lot of reckless mistakes, which then helped to pull himself together and not err again for years.
After his seventh title last year, the direction seemed clear as Hamilton had already reached Michael Schumacher’s record. With an eighth world title, the racer would finally crown himself the most excellent Formula 1 driver of all time. He even extended his contract for another year, so it seemed clear that the Briton would do everything possible to become the sole record holder.
The conditions for earning this title also seemed ideal, since Formula 1 did not want to implement its significant rule change until the following year. The change in the rulebook would redefine the technical basis of Formula 1 and thus reformulate the opportunities for all teams. But things turned out differently, when a driver, who had already demonstrated his enormous talent in recent seasons, openly declared war on Hamilton.
The Successor Doesn’t Want to Wait Any Longer
Max Verstappen started the season brilliantly. He demonstrated that he is unwilling to wait another year for his chance of victory. Verstappen, who is ironically considered a possible successor to Hamilton in his cockpit, surprised friends, and foes alike. His car turned out to be more than just competitive. And so, Verstappen won victory after victory in the Red Bull. Suddenly, Hamilton found himself in a situation that he had not anticipated for a long time. Of course, the world champion has always been considered a late starter, who needed a few races to show his true form.
Yet, the series winner of Formula 1 was not that far behind for a long time. In turn, Verstappen also took the lead in the drivers’ world championship. In doing so, he put pressure on the Mercedes drivers and the team itself as the members suddenly found themselves behind. They also had to acknowledge that Red Bull had done an excellent job during the break and that some racetracks are unbeatable. However, Lewis Hamilton wouldn’t be a 7-time world champion if he gave up in a challenging situation.
And so, the inevitable happened. The Briton proved that he is willing to do whatever he can to get his eighth title on the racetrack. In a thrilling race, it came to a direct duel, which some observers described this as unfair in retrospect, and Hamilton got what he wanted. Verstappen pulled back after the two vehicles touched one another. The world champion demonstrated his readiness to fight and regained the lead in the Formula 1 world championship. But after such an intense race, the claims of Hamilton being the sole champion are staked and the fans are eagerly waiting to see how the World Cup develops.
